Last weeks FDIC proved again to be the best week of the year. UL FSRI had the opportunity to spend time with many of our fire service partners and friends, sharing what we have been up to and learning from the world class presentations being taught all week. Director Kerber participated in 3 presentations. The first was a workshop titled, “Modern Fire Dynamics from Concepts to Reality” taught with Dan Madrzykowski (NIST), Lt. John Ceriello (FDNY) and DC George Healy (FDNY). We went through some history of ventilation, basics of fire dynamics, tactics and what FDNY has implemented as the result of the research conducted in partnership with NIST and UL.
The second class was in the “Big Room” and was cleverly named by Editor in Chief Bobby Halton, “Science in the Big Room.” Kerber, Madrzykowski, Healy and Ray (South Carolina State Fire Marshal) taught an overview of much of the research that has been conducted with a focus on flow paths and coordinated fire attack. Healy covered how and why FDNY has been involved in the research and what changes they have made to their procedures. Ray covered his involvement in the research in the Spartanburg burns with NIST and ISFSI and how smaller departments in his state have implemented the research results.
Finally Director Kerber taught a classroom session titled, “Top 20 Tactical Considerations from Firefighter Research”. This class shared some background as to why the fire service needs research and key tactical considerations that have been supported by the firefighter research that has taken place over the last decade.
